Sustainable Fashion Movement Inspires Advocacy in DU Alumna

Elle Magaña Mireles ’19 is using her love of writing and fashion as tools for advocacy.

Mireles, who graduated from Dominican University with a degree in business administration and apparel merchandising, is a blogger, freelance writer, community organizer and activist focused on promoting sustainable and ethical fashion choices — as well as social justice causes — related to the fashion industry.

One way she is taking on these initiatives is through her blog, SustainableAmor.com.

Three years after its creation, the Center for Igbo Studies at Dominican University is beginning a new academic year with plans for a more “vibrant” series of educational programs and efforts to seek historic designation of a Georgia site linked to an 1803 slave revolt.

Scientist, Dominican Alumna Featured in New Field Museum Exhibit

A new exhibit at Chicago’s Field Museum highlighting scientists who are women and people of color features a Dominican University alumna.

Lynika Strozier ’11, a scientist who worked in the Field Museum’s DNA lab, is the focus of the first exhibition in the Changing Face of Science series, which launched in late August.

Strozier died June 7, 2020 from complications of COVID-19. She was 35.

Spanish translations of portions of Dominican University’s website are now available in order to better serve the Spanish-speaking parents and family members of prospective students.

Information now provided in Spanish includes admission and applications, financial aid, resources for parents and guardians, and support services for students. These pages can be viewed at www.dom.edu/information-for/spanish-speakers.

In the News: Alum, Youth Mentorship Leader Hosts Back-to-School Haircut Drive

Jermaine Lawrence Anderson ’04 was recently featured in the Chicago Sun-Times as the mentorship organization he founded kicked off a month of free haircuts to Chicago youth heading back to school.

The haircut drive is taking place by appointment every Monday and Wednesday through Sept. 7 at the headquarters of Anderson’s organization, I Am A Gentleman, in Bridgeport.

Approximately 250 haircuts are expected to be given by the time the drive concludes.
