This interdisciplinary minor (SJCE) allows students to deepen their civic engagement in the community while studying emerging research in the field of social justice. It provides a forum for students to deepen their pursuit of the mission of Dominican University through study, compassionate service, the pursuit of truth and the creation of a more just and humane world. 

Who might be interested in this minor?

Students who have a passion for social justice, who want to make a difference or are interested in deepening their engagement in the community regardless of their major.  Students who are passionate about “making the world a better place!”  Students who wish to become leaders, entrepreneurs or community organizers.

But can I get a job?

The social justice and civic engagement minor provides excellent preparation for careers with international relations, international business, nonprofit organizations, governmental institutions, community organizing, teaching, urban planning, law, politics, social work, ministry or contemporary social sciences. Many employers seek potential employees who have with strong skills in leadership, human communication, diversity, community based research, service and civic engagement. This minor will enhance a student’s resume in those areas.
